Creative testing platforms: which ones survive a real media budget
Statistical rigour varies wildly between platforms. Here is what to check before you trust a winner.

Creative testing platforms promise statistical rigour. The question worth answering is how much of it survives contact with a live account.
The setup
An identical matrix — four concepts, three hooks, two formats — run through four platforms against the same audience over twelve weeks, with spend held constant. We were looking for one thing: would each platform reach the same conclusion about which concept won?
Two did. Two did not, and one of those two reversed its own conclusion in week nine without flagging that anything had changed.
Where the rigour actually varies
Every platform in this category will tell you it uses proper significance testing. The differences are in what they do about the awkward parts:
- Multiple comparisons. Testing twelve variants against one control means twelve chances at a false positive. Two platforms correct for this. Two report each comparison independently, which will hand you a “winner” roughly on schedule whether or not one exists.
- Minimum detectable effect. Only one platform told us, before the test, how large a difference it would be able to detect at our spend. That is the single most useful number in the whole exercise and three of four did not surface it.
- Creative fatigue. Performance decays with frequency. A platform that ignores this will call a late-starting variant a loser when it was simply fresher later.
At typical small-account spend levels, most creative tests are underpowered — they cannot detect the effect sizes they are being asked about. The platforms that stayed silent about this still produced confident winners.
Concept grouping is the real feature
The genuinely useful capability is grouping ads by visual concept rather than by campaign, so you learn what the creative did instead of what the targeting did. Two platforms do this well, and it changed how the team briefed the next round more than any significance calculation.
The short version
If you spend under about $30k a month on paid social, buy the tool for concept grouping and reporting, not for statistics you cannot power. Above that, pay for the platform that corrects for multiple comparisons and states its minimum detectable effect up front. There are two, and only one is priced sensibly.
