Best Ahrefs Alternatives in 2026: What You Actually Lose by Switching

Best Ahrefs Alternatives in 2026: What You Actually Lose by Switching

Ahrefs is easy to recommend and surprisingly difficult to replace.

Switching isn’t really about finding another platform with a keyword tool, backlink checker and site audit. Almost every serious SEO suite can tick those boxes now. The useful question is whether the replacement lets you complete the same work without adding extra steps, losing essential context or eventually paying for another tool to fill the gaps.

That’s what we tested.

For this comparison of the best Ahrefs alternatives, we used Ahrefs as the control and ran the same six jobs through every alternative: keyword research, competitor research, backlink analysis, technical auditing, rank tracking and general SEO research.

I also kept an eye on the stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into a feature checklist. How quickly could I get from a competitor to its strongest pages? Did I have to jump between reports to answer a simple question? And at what point did a cheaper or simpler alternative actually start feeling cheaper or simpler?

A platform can technically complete the same task and still make you miss Ahrefs every five minutes.

Quick Answer: What Is the Best Ahrefs Alternative?

Semrush was the closest overall Ahrefs alternative in our test. It fully replaced all six workflows and stayed closest to the Ahrefs control across keyword research, competitor analysis, backlink research, site auditing and rank tracking.

SE Ranking also completed all six workflows, making it a credible broad-suite alternative. Ubersuggest replaced five of six and was the strongest lower-cost all-in-one option.

Digimetrics replaced four of six workflows fully. It didn’t match Ahrefs for backlink depth or historical competitor exploration, but its guided recommendations and combined SEO/GEO workflow made it one of the better options for marketers who care more about what to do next than exploring the deepest possible dataset.

Mangools also replaced four workflows and was the easiest option for straightforward keyword and ranking work. Majestic replaced only one workflow overall, but that one happened to be backlinks, where it produced the strongest prospect yield in our test.

Need Best Ahrefs alternative Why
Closest overall Ahrefs replacement Semrush Replaced 6/6 workflows with the smallest overall capability gap
Best broad-suite alternative SE Ranking Replaced 6/6 workflows with strong auditing and rank tracking
Best lower-cost all-in-one Ubersuggest Replaced 5/6 workflows at a much lower entry price
Best guided SEO + GEO workflow Digimetrics Strong next-action guidance with SEO and AI visibility in one workspace
Best for backlinks Majestic Produced 26 usable prospects versus 24 in Ahrefs
Best for keyword research Mangools Produced a usable shortlist fastest and kept the workflow simple
Best for beginners Mangools Least intimidating route into keyword, SERP and rank data
Best free alternative Free Google + Ahrefs + Bing stack Fully replaced 2/6 workflows and partially covered three more

The interesting part isn’t only who won. It’s where each alternative stopped feeling like Ahrefs.

Why Replace Ahrefs in the First Place?

Ahrefs remains one of the most complete SEO platforms available. Its paid plans currently start with Lite at $129 per month, followed by Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449, while Enterprise starts at $1,499 per month. There’s also a lower-cost Starter option and free access for verified properties.

If you regularly use Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and competitor research together, the cost can make sense. The calculation changes when only two or three of those jobs matter.

Maybe backlinks are the whole reason you keep your subscription. Maybe you mostly use Ahrefs for keywords and rankings. Or maybe you want the same core SEO coverage but would rather have the platform tell you which issue deserves attention next.

That’s why I don’t think the right question is:

Which alternative has the most Ahrefs features?

The better question is:

Which parts of Ahrefs would I actually miss if I cancelled tomorrow?

That became the basis of the comparison.

If you’re still deciding whether you need a specialist tool or a broader platform in the first place, our guide to choosing the right SEO tool covers that decision separately.

How We Tested the Ahrefs Alternatives

We kept the inputs consistent rather than letting every tool show off whichever feature it happened to be best at.

Test detail Input
Test window 7–9 October 2026
Site profile Anonymised established B2B SaaS content site with 412 crawlable URLs
Target market United States, English, Google desktop
Tester DigitalMarketingTools.ai SEO Team with 15 years of combined SEO experience
Keyword research Same 10 commercial and informational seed keywords
Competitor research Same three mid-market competitor domains
Backlink analysis Same site and competitors; up to 50 referring-domain candidates manually classified
Site audit Same 412-URL crawl scope; 25 findings manually validated
Rank tracking Same 20 keywords, market and device
Research workflow Same six research questions and next-action tasks

The timing figures represent active analysis time. Waiting for crawls or scheduled ranking updates was excluded so platforms weren’t penalised simply because some processing happened in the background.

How We Defined a Replacement

Full means the task could be completed satisfactorily without a major workaround or another paid tool.

Partial means we could still get something useful, but an important part of the task was missing or had to be manually reconstructed.

Not replaced means the platform didn’t provide a comparable workflow.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate

We calculated:

Ahrefs Replacement Rate = fully replaced workflows ÷ 6 × 100

Partial results still matter, but they don’t count towards the replacement rate.

That keeps a specialist like Majestic from being unfairly punished for not doing everything, while also stopping us from calling it a full Ahrefs replacement just because its backlink tools are good.

A 100% replacement rate doesn’t mean the experience was identical to Ahrefs. It only means all six defined jobs could be completed without another paid platform.

Comparable Output Snapshot

More results don’t automatically mean better results. This table is here to show whether each product produced enough useful output to complete the same task.

The rank-check median difference is the median absolute difference between each platform’s initially reported position and our manual verification sample. It’s a consistency check for this test, not a universal accuracy ranking.

Ahrefs as the Control

Ahrefs Site Explorer overview showing backlink, referring-domain and organic-search metrics for the public ahrefs.com domain

Before judging the alternatives, we needed a baseline.

Ahrefs completed all six jobs without an external handoff. It produced 27 shortlisted keyword opportunities in 12 minutes, surfaced 146 relevant competitor gaps, returned 24 usable backlink prospects from our 50-result review and produced 22 validated audit findings from our 25-item sample.

All 20 ranking keywords were accepted, with a median difference of 1.1 positions from our manual checks. The six broader research questions took 22 minutes.

What stood out wasn’t one spectacular number. It was continuity.

I could start with a competitor domain, move into its strongest pages, jump into the keywords driving those pages and then investigate who was linking to them without feeling like I’d started a completely different research session.

That’s the part an alternative has to replace, not just the individual buttons.

1. Semrush: The Closest Full Ahrefs Replacement

Semrush Backlink Analytics overview showing referring domains, backlinks, authority score and a network graph for a public website

Semrush competes with Ahrefs across keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, rank tracking and technical auditing.

If you’re leaving Ahrefs purely because it feels expensive, Semrush isn’t necessarily the escape route. It’s another premium SEO ecosystem. But if the goal is replacing as much of Ahrefs as possible with one subscription, it came closest.

What Semrush Replaced Well

Semrush fully replaced all six workflows.

It produced 30 shortlisted keyword opportunities versus 27 in Ahrefs, while Keyword Gap surfaced 158 relevant competitor opportunities compared with Ahrefs’ 146.

Its audit sample was effectively tied with Ahrefs at 23/25 validated findings versus 22/25, while its initial rank positions were the closest to our manual checks at 0.9 positions median difference.

Backlinks were close too: 23 usable prospects versus 24 in Ahrefs.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 6/6 · 100%

Where I Felt the Difference

Backlinks were where Ahrefs still felt more natural.

The backlink task took 15 minutes in Semrush compared with 11 minutes in Ahrefs. I could reach the same kind of answer, but the work was spread across Backlink Analytics, Backlink Gap and related reports.

Ahrefs felt more direct when I started with a domain or page and wanted to keep digging into links. Semrush felt stronger when the question started spilling into broader competitor or paid-search context.

I’d switch from Ahrefs to Semrush if I wanted the closest full replacement. I’d stay with Ahrefs if most of my working day started in Site Explorer.

For a wider comparison, see our best all-in-one SEO tools test.

2. SE Ranking: The Broad-Suite Alternative

SE Ranking Backlink Checker overview showing domain trust, referring domains, backlinks and toxicity data for notion.com

SE Ranking also completed all six workflows.

That result is worth paying attention to because SE Ranking is often treated as the lighter alternative rather than a genuine full-suite replacement.

What SE Ranking Replaced Well

It created a 25-keyword shortlist, found 137 competitor-gap opportunities and completed the full 412-URL audit scope with 21 validated findings from our 25-item sample.

Its rank results differed from manual checks by a median of one position, almost identical to Ahrefs.

All six broader research questions could also be completed without another paid platform.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 6/6 · 100%

Where I Felt the Downgrade

The backlink workflow returned 19 usable prospects versus Ahrefs’ 24 and took 18 minutes instead of 11.

Competitor research also required more jumping between reports. The answer was there; what I lost was some of the speed and depth of exploration.

That matters less if your week is mostly audits, tracking and reporting. It matters a lot more if you’re digging through competitors and links for hours.

3. Ubersuggest: The Lower-Cost Ahrefs Alternative

Ubersuggest Backlink Overview showing domain authority, referring domains and backlinks for the public backlinko.com domain

Ubersuggest is the clearest option in this test for someone whose first complaint about Ahrefs is price.

It fully replaced five of six workflows, producing 22 shortlisted keywords, 118 competitor-gap opportunities and 20 validated audit findings.

All 20 keywords could be tracked, with the initial positions differing from manual checks by a median 1.6 positions. The six research questions took 34 minutes.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 5/6 · 83%

Where the Lower Price Became Obvious

Backlinks.

Ubersuggest produced 12 usable prospects from the same 50-result sample. Ahrefs produced 24.

That doesn’t make its backlink data useless. For a quick profile check, it did the job. But it was the first workflow where I found myself thinking I’d probably reopen Ahrefs before making a serious link decision.

Its site audit was almost the opposite: more prescriptive and easier for a beginner, but less configurable.

I’d choose Ubersuggest if I wanted a lower-cost all-in-one and backlinks weren’t central to my work.

4. Digimetrics: The Guided SEO + GEO Alternative

Digimetrics dashboard showing guided goals for SEO, site health, rankings, competitor research, content and AI-search visibility

Digimetrics approaches the problem differently from Ahrefs.

Rather than placing most of the value on giving you more datasets to explore, the platform leans more heavily into helping you turn SEO data into an actual next action, while also bringing GEO and AI visibility into the same workspace.

That made it an interesting inclusion here. I wasn’t expecting Digimetrics to match Ahrefs feature for feature, particularly around links. What I wanted to know was whether it could replace enough of the everyday research workflow that I wouldn’t immediately need to reopen Ahrefs.

Disclosure: Digimetrics is developed by the MediaOne team, which also operates DigitalMarketingTools.ai. We included it because its SEO and GEO workflow is directly relevant to this comparison. It was assessed using the same inputs and replacement criteria as every other product, without preferential weighting.

What Digimetrics Replaced Well

Digimetrics fully replaced four of six workflows.

Keyword research produced a shortlist of 24 usable opportunities from the same 10 seed terms. That was enough to complete the task, although Ahrefs still offered deeper historical and page-level exploration.

The site audit returned 21 of our 25 manually validated findings, putting it level with SE Ranking in our validation sample and just one behind Ahrefs.

Rank tracking was also competitive. Across the same 20-keyword manual check, the median absolute difference was 1.2 positions.

The strongest result, though, came from the broader workflow. Digimetrics answered the same six research questions in 29 minutes without another paid platform.

That was seven minutes slower than Ahrefs but faster than SE Ranking, Ubersuggest, Mangools and the free stack.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 4/6 · 67%

Where I Felt the Difference From Ahrefs

The biggest gap was backlink depth and historical competitor exploration.

Digimetrics produced 10 usable backlink prospects from 50 checked results, compared with Ahrefs’ 24.

Its competitor workflow surfaced 96 plausible gap opportunities, versus 146 in Ahrefs, and it didn’t reproduce the same depth of historical and page-to-keyword-to-link exploration.

The issue wasn’t that Digimetrics had nothing useful to show. It was that Ahrefs let me keep drilling deeper.

A generalist marketer could use Digimetrics to identify the direction of an opportunity and move into a prioritised action plan. A dedicated link specialist would still be much more likely to reopen Ahrefs or another specialist backlink database.

Where Digimetrics Felt Different

The clearest advantage was action clarity.

Once an issue was identified, the evidence and suggested next step stayed closer together. I spent less time staring at another table wondering which report I should open next.

That helps explain why the full six-question workflow took 29 minutes despite having less competitor and backlink depth than Ahrefs.

For a generalist, smaller team or marketer juggling SEO with other responsibilities, that guidance can matter as much as raw database size.

The GEO Difference

Digimetrics also brings traditional SEO and GEO/AI-search visibility closer together, including AI discovery, brand-mention monitoring and GEO-focused optimisation workflows.

We deliberately did not award extra points for those features because GEO wasn’t one of the six Ahrefs-replacement jobs.

That keeps the comparison fair.

Ahrefs has also expanded into AI visibility, so I wouldn’t position GEO as something only Digimetrics can do. The more useful difference is how naturally those workflows sit beside traditional SEO and whether the recommendations help you decide what to work on next.

Would I Switch?

I’d consider Digimetrics if I wanted more guidance around what to do next and preferred keeping traditional SEO and GEO work closer together.

I’d keep Ahrefs if most of my day revolved around deep backlink research, historical competitor analysis and repeatedly drilling from domains into pages, keywords and links.

Digimetrics doesn’t need to be “Ahrefs, but better” to make sense as an alternative. It needs to replace the right parts of Ahrefs for the right kind of user while giving them something useful in return.

For a closer look at the platform, see our Digimetrics overview.

5. Mangools: What If Ahrefs Is More Tool Than You Need?

Mangools KWFinder interface showing keyword difficulty, search volume and a SERP overview for a public keyword example

Mangools takes almost the opposite approach from Ahrefs. Its core jobs are split across KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler.

Having less on screen was occasionally a relief.

Mangools fully replaced keyword research, basic competitor research, our defined backlink-prospecting task and rank tracking.

It produced 24 shortlisted keywords in nine minutes, the fastest keyword workflow in the comparison. SERPWatcher accepted all 20 keywords and differed from manual checks by a median 1.4 positions, while LinkMiner produced 15 usable backlink prospects.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 4/6 · 67%

Where it falls short is broader workflow continuity. Mangools didn’t provide a conventional technical audit comparable with Ahrefs Site Audit, and the six research questions took 40 minutes with one external handoff.

I’d choose it if Ahrefs is mostly a keyword, SERP, ranking and occasional backlink tool for you. I wouldn’t treat it as a one-subscription replacement for technical auditing and deeper competitor research.

Majestic demo showing Trust Flow, Citation Flow, Topical Trust Flow, a link graph and a link-profile chart for example.com

Majestic is the odd one out.

It replaced only one of our six Ahrefs workflows.

And I’d still keep it on the shortlist.

The reason is simple: that one workflow was backlinks, and Majestic produced the strongest result.

Of the 50 candidates reviewed, 45 were live, 36 were topically relevant and 26 were usable prospects. Ahrefs produced 24 usable prospects.

Link Context and Topical Trust Flow were particularly useful when separating a link that merely existed from one that actually made sense for the campaign.

The task took 16 minutes, five longer than Ahrefs, but produced two additional usable prospects.

Ahrefs Replacement Rate: 1/6 · 17%

If you want one platform to handle keywords, technical audits, conventional rank tracking and competitor research, Majestic isn’t the answer.

If links are the main reason your Ahrefs subscription exists, it deserves a very different conversation.

Is There Actually a Free Alternative to Ahrefs?

Diagram showing a free Ahrefs alternative stack built from Google Search Console, Keyword Planner, Screaming Frog, Ahrefs Free and Bing Webmaster Tools

If you’re searching for an Ahrefs free alternative, I’d push back on the wording a little.

There isn’t one free product in our test that reproduced the complete Ahrefs workflow. A more realistic approach was combining Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner, Screaming Frog Free, Ahrefs Free, Bing Webmaster Tools and a few limited public tools.

That stack fully replaced keyword research and technical auditing.

Competitor research produced 47 manually assembled opportunities, backlink research gave us eight usable prospects and Search Console could provide owned-site ranking trends. But none of those recreated a dedicated competitor index or conventional rank tracker.

The six research questions took 58 minutes and four tool handoffs.

Free-stack Replacement Rate: 2/6 · 33%

That was the point where “free” started costing us in time.

The stack is surprisingly capable for analysing your own site. Competitor intelligence, repeatable backlink research and rank tracking expose the biggest gaps.

If keyword research is the main thing you’re trying to cover without another subscription, our test of the best free SEO keyword tools goes deeper into that part of the workflow.

What Do You Actually Lose When You Leave Ahrefs?

This ended up being more useful than comparing feature lists.

What changed What our comparison showed
Backlink research Semrush stayed close; Digimetrics produced 14 fewer usable prospects, while Majestic produced two more than Ahrefs
Keyword research Every broad alternative produced a workable shortlist; the differences were more about filtering, context and navigation
Competitor research Semrush came closest; Digimetrics returned 96 opportunities versus Ahrefs’ 146 and offered less historical/page-level drilling
Technical auditing Semrush, SE Ranking, Ubersuggest and Digimetrics replaced the defined audit; Mangools and Majestic required another crawler
Rank tracking Dedicated alternatives tested within a median 0.9–1.6 positions of our manual sample
Action guidance Digimetrics put more emphasis on prioritised next steps rather than raw exploration depth
Research speed Ahrefs took 22 min; Semrush 26; Digimetrics 29; SE Ranking 31; Ubersuggest 34; Mangools 40; free stack 58
Additional capabilities Digimetrics added GEO/AI visibility in the same workspace, but we did not count that towards its Ahrefs replacement score

The biggest thing I missed from Ahrefs wasn’t necessarily a metric.

It was continuity.

Most of these platforms could eventually get me to the answer. The difference was how often I had to stop, switch reports and rebuild the context I already had.

Digimetrics showed another side of that trade-off. It offered less depth in some areas, but spent more effort helping me decide what to do with the information it did surface.

That’s why a raw feature count isn’t enough to decide whether switching makes sense.

Which Ahrefs Alternative Should You Choose?

If your main problem is… Choose… Why
You want the closest full replacement Semrush Completed all six jobs and stayed closest to Ahrefs overall
You want broad coverage with strong tracking and audits SE Ranking Replaced all six workflows
Ahrefs is too expensive Ubersuggest Replaced five of six workflows at a much lower entry cost
You want guidance plus SEO and GEO Digimetrics Strong action prioritisation with SEO and AI visibility together
Backlinks are your main job Majestic Produced the highest usable-prospect yield
You mainly need keywords and rankings Mangools Simplest and fastest keyword workflow
You want something easier for a beginner Mangools Less interface complexity
Your budget is $0 Free stack Strong owned-site coverage with clear competitor limitations

You can also start with our broader SEO tools guide if you’re choosing around a particular SEO job rather than specifically replacing Ahrefs.

Final Verdict: Which Ahrefs Alternative Is Best?

Semrush is the closest complete Ahrefs alternative in this comparison.

It replaced all six workflows, stayed close to the Ahrefs control in backlinks and auditing, and slightly outperformed it in our keyword shortlist, competitor-gap output and rank-check consistency sample.

SE Ranking also replaced all six jobs. That makes it a genuine broad-suite alternative, particularly for teams focused on audits, tracking and recurring client work, although competitor and backlink exploration took longer.

Ubersuggest is the better choice when price is the main constraint and backlinks are secondary.

Digimetrics is more interesting for a different reason. It replaced four workflows completely and stayed competitive on auditing, rankings and overall research speed, but its real strength was turning findings into prioritised next actionswhile keeping GEO and AI visibility nearby. It’s a better fit for generalists and teams that want guidance than for dedicated link researchers.

Mangools makes sense when you don’t actually need to replace all of Ahrefs. Majestic is even more specialised: it won our backlink-prospecting sample but isn’t trying to replace the rest of the suite.

And some users probably shouldn’t switch at all.

If most of your work starts in Site Explorer and repeatedly moves between competitor pages, keywords and links, keeping Ahrefs may cost less than rebuilding the same workflow elsewhere.

The useful question isn’t which platform has the longest feature list.

It’s:

If I stop paying for Ahrefs tomorrow, what am I going to miss on Monday?

If the answer is “not much,” one of these alternatives can probably save money or fit your workflow better.

If the answer is “the exact part of Ahrefs I use every day,” switching purely for the sake of switching probably isn’t worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Best Alternative to Ahrefs?

Semrush was the closest overall replacement in our test. It completed all six workflows and stayed close to Ahrefs across keywords, competitors, backlinks, auditing and rank tracking. SE Ranking also completed all six, while Digimetrics, Ubersuggest and the specialist tools made more sense for particular workflows or budgets.

Is There a Free Alternative to Ahrefs?

There isn’t one free product that completely replaces Ahrefs. Our free stack fully replaced two of six workflows and partially covered three more. It worked well for owned-site analysis but was much weaker for competitor intelligence, backlinks and repeatable rank tracking.

Is Semrush Better Than Ahrefs?

Neither won every job. Semrush produced more shortlisted keywords, more competitor-gap opportunities and one additional validated audit finding in our test. Ahrefs completed backlink research faster and provided a more connected link-first research experience.

Is Digimetrics a Good Ahrefs Alternative?

It can be, depending on what you want to replace. Digimetrics fully replaced four of six workflows in our test, including keyword research, site auditing, rank tracking and our general research workflow. Its biggest weaknesses were backlink depth and historical competitor exploration. Its strongest differentiator was clearer action prioritisation alongside integrated SEO and GEO workflows.

Is SE Ranking a Good Ahrefs Alternative?

Yes. SE Ranking completed all six workflows in our test. Its biggest compromise was backlink and competitor exploration: it produced 19 usable backlink prospects versus Ahrefs’ 24 and took longer to complete the broader research workflow.

Is Ubersuggest a Free Ahrefs Alternative?

Ubersuggest has limited free functionality, but its free experience isn’t equivalent to Ahrefs. In our paid-workflow test it replaced five of six jobs, with backlink research being the main weakness.

Is Mangools a Good Alternative to Ahrefs?

Mangools is a good alternative if you mainly need keyword research, SERP analysis, rank tracking and occasional backlink work. It replaced four of six workflows and produced the fastest keyword shortlist, but it isn’t a complete technical or competitor-research replacement.

Is Majestic Better Than Ahrefs for Backlinks?

In our specific 50-candidate backlink test, Majestic produced 26 usable prospects compared with Ahrefs’ 24, the highest result in the comparison. Ahrefs completed the task faster and offers a much broader SEO platform, so Majestic’s win applies specifically to this backlink-prospecting test rather than SEO overall.

Should I Cancel Ahrefs for a Cheaper Alternative?

Only if the replacement covers the jobs you repeatedly perform. Subscription savings disappear quickly if you need another paid tool or substantially more analysis time to recreate the workflow you already had.
